Printers

Definition

Printers are information output devices that create a hard copy of processed data or information on paper. They play a crucial role in producing physical documents, images, and graphics from digital files.

Types of Printers

  1. Impact Printers

    • Description: Impact printers operate by physically striking an ink ribbon against paper to print characters. They use a print head or hammer that makes contact with the paper to transfer ink.

    • Examples:

      • Dot Matrix Printer: Uses a matrix of pins to create characters by striking an inked ribbon against the paper.
      • Daisy Wheel Printer: Utilizes a wheel with raised characters that strikes the ribbon to print text, similar to a typewriter.
      • Line Printer: Prints an entire line of text at once using a series of print heads, making it suitable for high-speed printing.
      • Chain Printer: Uses a chain of characters that moves across the paper, printing multiple characters in one pass.
    • Characteristics:

      • Extremely low consumable costs, making them cost-effective for high-volume printing.
      • Fairly noisy during operation due to the mechanical striking action.
      • Ideal for large-scale printing tasks because of their affordability.
      • Requires physical contact with the paper to create an image.
  2. Non-Impact Printers

    • Description: Non-impact printers create images and text without physically striking the paper. They are often referred to as page printers because they can print an entire page at once.

    • Examples:

      • Laser Printer: Uses a laser beam to transfer toner onto paper, producing high-quality prints at fast speeds.
      • Inkjet Printer: Sprays tiny droplets of liquid ink onto the paper to create images and text, offering vibrant color reproduction.
    • Characteristics:

      • Quicker printing speeds compared to impact printers.
      • Operate quietly, as there is no mechanical striking involved.
      • Produce superior print quality, with finer details and smoother edges.
      • Support a wide range of fonts and character sizes, enhancing versatility in printing.
